Vertical extension: Renovation of the University of Graz Library, Graz, Austria
The vertical extension, inspired by 'cloud iron' urban densification concept from the 1920s, tops the renovated library building of the Karl-Franzens University of Graz. This long glass block cantilevers over the building's new main entrance, whilst creating a canopy for a new public square below. Interfaces between old and new - Renovation of Univ of Graz Library
Combining old and new - the challenge of creating interfaces between buildings is even more difficult when you have totally different styles of architecture and materials. For the renovation of the library building of the Karl-Franzens University of Graz, the architect used mirrored glass panels to cleverly give the illusion of symmetry and continuity. Renovation of the University of Graz Library, Graz, Austria
Combining old and new - The library building of the Karl-Franzens University of Graz required updating, but instead of adding yet another extension to the classicist building, which had already been extended several times, the architects demolished sections to expose the original building, and created much needed new space in a vertical extension. This long glass block cantilevers over the building's new main entrance, whilst creating a canopy for a new public square below. Meet the architect: Renovation of Univ of Graz Library, Graz, Austria
Thomas Pucher describes how the expectation of losing the competition liberated their imagination to come up with a daring proposal to really transform not just the building, but the urban realm surrounding it. The renovated building received the rare accolade of being listed as a historical monument upon completion.
