Hitler lifts the first ceremonial shovelful of earth marking the beginning of construction of a Reich autobahn in Austria, 1938. A great fan of the motorcar, Hitler had very "modern" ideas in light of what happened after the war with motor transportation. He envisaged not only a grand system of highways for "Greater Germany" but also a network of international motorways linking Germany with the far corners of Europe via the automobile.
