The water is shallow, and the ground covered with soft mud. On our trip to the last remnant of the Aral Sea, we sink into the sea bed with a slurping sound, sometimes up to our knees. The water is extremely salty, as in the Dead Sea. But the once enormous Aral Sea is not only dead, but also dying. Massive irrigation and the diversion of water from two rivers led to a shrinking of its surface over the course of the 20th century. Read our blog post about an excursion on the former sea bed!
