Spinning silk at the Tomioka Silk Mill (UNESCO)

The silk spinning factory of Tomioka is an underrated UNESCO site in Japan. Few foreigners venture there, but we found our visit to Tomioka fascinating. The Tomioka silk factory was built in 1872 when Japan suddenly opened up to Western technology. Foreign experts came in to help with the industrialisation of an already thriving silk industry - and Japan became a market leader in silk!
