Ancient Mesopotamians pressed reeds into wet clay to create a script known as cuneiform, one of the world’s first writing systems. This text records land transfer information. The tablets also included epic poetry, medical instructions, and official records of all kinds. Scholars at the Oriental Institute have studied thousands of texts and are producing a reference work to the ancient languages of the region, the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary.
