This Nyckelharpa was made in Sweden by Olle Plahn. It is a keyed fiddle with tangents pressing notes on the strings like a Hurdy Gurdy, but hand bowed. It has a wonderful olde world sound. A popular Swedish folk instrument, it is also being used in Irish celtic music. Plenty of examples of it being played on YouTube.
I'd love to learn how to play the instrument of my Irish ancestors, the bagpipes.

The nyckelharpa is a Swedish instrument with 16 strings and 37 keys. The keys slide under the strings to dampen or fret them by reaching up to the string; the strings are played with a bow. The earliest evidence of a nyckelharpa is an image dating back to 1350 C.E. and the oldest existing instrument was built in 1526 C.E. Pictured is nyckelharpa player Bronwyn Bird.
