The Ten Commandments in a 12th century Torah Scroll in the Vatican Library. The passage begins:  "I am Yehovah your God who took you out of the Land of Egypt from the house of slavery." (Exodus 20:2)  In contrast to a codex (handwritten book), a Torah Scroll does not contain vowels, even today. As a result, before printing, Bibles with vowels were extremely rare. The Morgan Library & Museum Belle da Costa Greene advised Pierpont Morgan, and later his son, Junius, on the acquisition of one of the world's finest collections of books and illuminated manuscripts. Shown here is a depiction of the Miracle of Seven Sorrows, which is in a Belgium illuminated manuscript from ca. 1515.
