In "The Puzzle People," I depict the blowing up of this church in East Berlin. When the Berlin Wall went up in 1961, a church was caught in the "death strip"--the no-man's land between the inner and outer walls. This church, ironically known as the Church of Reconciliation, remained in the death strip until 1985, when the East German government decided that a church trapped between two walls made bad public relations. So they blew up the church. This image just added to their bad P.R.
