This garment's design juxtaposes interlocking squares with gently diagonal passages of pines, in their conventionalized cloudlike form. The entire pattern was rendered in a resist-dyeing technique called kanoko (literally, fawn) shibori, in which tiny portions of the fabric were tied with thread and the cloth was dyed with indigo
