Samuel Crompton ♦ English inventor and pioneer of the spinning industry. Building on the work of James Hargreaves and Richard Arkwright he invented the spinning mule, a machine that revolutionised the industry worldwide.

The town of Bolton is best known for cotton spinning and Samuel Crompton, inventor of the spinning mule in 1779. The spinning jenny was to revolutionise cotton spinning, it combined the roller drafting (drawing out the fibres) of Arkwright's water frame with the carriage drafting and spindle tip twisting of Hargreave's jenny, and produced a high quality yarn. Self-acting mules continued in use in Bolton mills until the 1960s.
