The French Emperor Napoleon I gave this diadem to his second wife, Empress Marie Louise in 1810 as a wedding present. It was made by French jewelers Nitot et Fils. Marie Louise, who was Austrian-born, bequethed the piece to the royal family of Austria. More than 1,000 diamonds totalling about 700 carats surround the Persian turquoise in this silver diadem. Originally it was set with 79 emeralds, but they were replaced with turquoise before the diadem was donated to the Museum.
