Caroline Louise of Hesse-Darmstadt, (1723-1783), Margravine of Baden, 1745,by Jean-Étienne Liotard Dilettante artist, scientist, collector. Learned, spoke 5 languages, corresponded with Voltaire and made Karlsruhe a cultural center. Member of the court orchestra, painted in water colors and had a laboratory set up in the Karlsruhe palace. Her collections form the foundation of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe museum of natural science.
