Ornamental baboon tarantula

Heteroscodra maculata is an Old World species of tarantula which was first described in 1899 by Reginald Innes Pocock. This species Native to West Africa and is found primarily in Togo and Ghana. This species has many common names, of which Togo Starburst and ornamental Baboon are most frequently encountered.

This beautiful spider native to India, is favored among tree spiders and one of the staples of the tarantula hobby. Females can live up to eight years, while males live for only about a third as long as females, as with all tarantulas. Although this tree spider seems to prefer flying insects such as moths, it will eagerly feed on grasshoppers and crickets and larger specimens may even consume a mouse.
