The Irish historian, Donnchadh Ó Corráin, theorised the Norwegian Vikings sailed to Ireland from their colonies in Scotland. According to the Annals of Inisfallen, the Norse-Gael leader Búitíne arrived in Ireland with a fleet in 857. His Irish name suggests he spent time in the Norse settlements of Scotland before returning home to Ireland.
