Thomas Cole, 1837. Cole visited Italy in 1831 and made a small pencil sketch of this vista of Florence shortly before sunset. In his New York studio six years later, he transformed the drawing into this large oil painting, adding picturesque humans and goats to the foreground.

The painting “Tuscany. Summer grace.” I like to paint pictures with landscapes of Tuscany. They are so cozy and at the same time spacious, warm and calm. It seems to me that my eyes are resting, looking at this summer silence. You watch and maybe even hear the chirping of grasshoppers in the grass, feel the lazy warm breeze and the smells of summer. Fields of wheat and lavender, cypresses and mountains, green hills in the distance and a riot of cypress by the road.
