The Portuguese spindle is very porpable and one can spin holdind it constantly. For me it is a new concept in spindle spinning as one does not have to be standing to spin with these spindles.

When you unite the spindle stick and removable whorl, you'll have to ponder where the whorl will fit best. Many spindle sticks have their tapered ends at the bottom. This is where the whorl will slide on. I suggest using a tiny hair rubber band to fix below the whorl to 'encourage' the whorl to stay in place. About two years ago I saw a snapshot of a DIY turkish spindle on Ravelry. It inspired me to build something that I like to call paleo spindle for myself. Of course I have no proof that something like that was actually used in the Paleolithic but I would imagine that it is quiet possible considering that it's build from stuff readily available in nature and does need nothing more than stone age ...
