Many people believe that the character of Sherlock Holmes was based on one of Doyle's medical teacher's Doctor Joseph Bell. Bell was a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh and was a student of observation and deduction. To illustrate this, he would often pick a stranger and, by observing him, deduce his occupation and recent activities. Doctor Watson was based on Doyle, himself.
