Corpus luteum

This image shows how a follicle develops in the ovary. The follicle begins as a primordial follicle until it develops into a primary follicle that eventually develops into a mature follicle. This mature follicle eventually ruptures during ovulation and the egg is transported to the uterus. After ovulation, the luteal phase begins and the corpus luteum develops. The corpus luteum becomes smaller and smaller until it becomes a corpus albicans.

Normal reproductive years of the female are characterized by monthly rhythmic changes in the rates of secretion of the female hormones and corresponding changes in the ovaries and sexual organs as well. This rhythmic pattern is called the female sexual cycle (menstrual cycle). The duration of the cycle averages 28 days.

Hypothalamic-pituitary cycle. FSH: Stimulates development of ovarian follicles. LH: Stimulates the follicle to release the ovum. Gn-RH: Stimulates the release of the hormones FSH and LH from the pituitary. Estrogen & Progesterone: Falling levels of these 2 hormones stimulate the hypothalamus.
