I already had the wood boxes from another project so decided to spruce them up with cement board and cement covering. After it dries I gave it a light sand. I didn’t want it too rough or too smooth just textured enough. I did also spray some waterproof cement sealer too for added protection. I’ve learned quite a bit from personal experience in our home and my fav internet Stucco guru, Kirk Giordano (look him up). In a nutshell, there are many types of stucco, textures, & systems. It’s quite overwhelming.  We went with the 2-system method, which is comprised of a scratch and brown coat in a bag ready to go and your final finish either in a bag or in a bucket.  If I had to do the garden beds all over again, I would have gone with the traditional coat system all the way. I did use the traditional method with La Habra Scratch & Brown coat, but I should have also used their smooth finish.
