The Appenzeller Sennenhunde originated as an all-around farm dog breed, who stayed busy herding the livestock, guarding the farm, and pulling carts in their native Switzerland. Today’s Appenzellers still have the energy, smarts, and self-confidence that makes for valuable working dogs — but they’re anything but low-maintenance. Even though these are purebred dogs, you may find them in the care of shelters or rescue groups. Remember to adopt! Don’t shop if you want to bring a dog home.
