Ancient to Medieval (And Slightly Later) History
From the time of the later Roman Empire and up until the 10th century the Spangenhelm remained extremely popular with both Romans and barbarians. The helmet dome being usually made of several plates reinforced with metal bands. Sometimes the dome was worn on it's own but often the helmet was fitted with cheek pieces, an aventail and occasionally a nasal. By the 10th century the cheek pieces had been dropped but aventails were still used. Nasals only became universal during the late 10th century.
