Behaviour Motivation - Write each child’s name on one end of a craft stick and store the sticks name down in a cup labeled “Mystery Student.” Choose a behavior and write it on the board. Select a stick, but don't reveal the name. Throughout the lesson, monitor for the behavior. If he achieves the goal behavior, reveal his identity and reward him (sitting at the teacher’s desk, writing with a special pen, etc). If not, tell the class that there was not a winner this time.

When you say "fist to five check" students rate their understanding by holding up the appropriate number of fingers. The goal is for everyone to be in the green. Great way for students to self-assess their understanding and help you to gauge student understanding.

When a kid is doing what he/she is supposed to be doing and I catch him/her, that student then gets to sign his/her name in a box. At the end of the day, I roll a dice for the letter and the number. The student gets a reward....Behavior Management & teaches co-ordinate points

"Brain Break" sticks! Each popsicle stick has an activity on it {like spin 3x, jump rope, macarena, seat swap, etc...}. When I see that the kids are starting to fade away, I stop and say "man, our brains need to take a break...lets do a brain break."

I like this as a general guide to novel structure. However many resources I've read warn against getting too locked into a single script or pattern like this. Sometimes you need to save the climax for the last two pages, and sometimes you need the action to start on the first page (and fill in 'setup' stuff later).

Every day, write a compliment to a student and hang it in class. I love this idea!
