P/O Victor BS Verity claimed 2 Ju 88 bombers 6 days after being detached to No 615 Squadron RAF in France on 14 May 1940, but was shot down by escorting Me 110 fighters and crashed at his base at Norrent-Fontes. Ordered to return to No 229 Squadron RAF, the 20-year-old New Zealander rejoined on 23 May. Operating from RAF Biggin Hill on 31 May, he was again shot down over Dunkirk and rescued from the sea by a paddle steamer, the captain of which confirming his victory over an Me 110.
