This photograph shows Mr Bill Kirton as he salutes the end of the miners’ strike in the welfare club at Sharleston colliery, March 1974. Industrial action by the miners over pay led to the introduction of a three-day-week by Conservative prime minister Edward Heath in December 1973 to conserve electricity. Wages were eventually increased by 35% following the election of a Labour government in October 1974.

Pension age rise: Australians to be the oldest workers in the world. The poorest and most vulnerable suffer in old age so the rich and the big miners can still receive their government handouts. If the Libs can break promises not to touch pensions, not touch the ABC, why not increase GST. This, and removing the welfare for the wealthy and corporates, would solve most of Joe’s budget hole. The sense of entitlement in this country belongs almost exclusively to the wealthy elite.
