A Simple away to Evaluate Student Writing

Here you will find a basic writing rubric for elementary grade students, along with samples of an expository and narrative rubric. Plus: Learn how to use a writing rubric.

Use this simple writing rubric to help your students learn the difference between a 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the areas of capitalization, punctuation, spelling, handwriting, and parts of a story. The comparison to a cheeseburger is fun and helps students understand the scores in each area.

Very kid-friendly. It is important for them to understand what each criterion means so they can self-assess and improve their own writing, no matter what grade they are in.

Paragraph Writing Rubric …

This is part of the free editing set from First Grade Wow. For kindergarten, I use it to show what they can do (smiley face in the check box) and what their newest personal challenge is (I highlight the check box). They keep it in their writing folders. It helps differentiate learning and gives each student focus. There are many other useful pages in the packet, too. All free!

By request, I have created Common Core Writing Rubrics based specifically on the language used in the Common Core Standards to assess the students in their writing. I have included a rubric for each grade level (Grades 1-4) in each of the 3 types of Common Core Writing: Opinion, Informative/Explanatory, and Narrative Writing.
