San Bernardino Pass, Switzerland At nearly 6,800 feet up in the Western Alps of Switzerland, the San Bernardino Pass claims a history that dates back to the 15th century, when it first became part of an important route for foot traffic between the Swiss cities of Thusis and Splugen. Since the four-mile-long San Bernardino road tunnel opened in the late 1960s, however, it's no longer necessary to travel the mountain pass to go between the Mesolcina and Hinterrhein valleys.
