Susie Scanlan, a St. Paul Central High School graduate, won a bronze medal for being part of the U.S. Olympic women's epee team that defeated Russia for third place in London on Saturday, Aug. 4. Scanlan did not participate in the bronze-medal fencing match, but had fenced in previous rounds and received a medal. The women's epee team was coached by Roberto Sobalvarro, head coach at the Twin Cities Fencing Club in St. Paul.
Sergei Ilnitsky of Russia, a photographer working for the European Pressphoto Agency, has won the second prize in the Sports Action Stories category of the World Press Photo Contest 2013 with the series The Golden Touch - Fencing at the Olympics. Deepika Kumari, India’s greatest hope for archery, failed in Rio Olympics 2016 to deliver the shots when it mattered pretty much and after then losing blamed her failure on the windy conditions after the team went down 4-5 to Russia in the quarterfinals of the women’s recurve competition.
