Notorious for its neutrality, it makes light, uninteresting white wines with high acidity. It shines in the area of Neusiedlersee in SE Austria as sweet & textured Trockenbeerenauslese.
WHITE ELBLING Pineapple, apple, pear, grapefruit, almond, grass, coriander, mint, cumin, pepper (white). Synonyms include: Weisser Silvaner, Räifrench. An ancient white grape that, during medieval times, covered much of what is now Germany and Luxembourg. The variety is most extensively planted in the Mosel, typically in sites where Riesling struggles to ripen. It has very high acidity and low alcohol, making it suitable for sparkling wine.
