Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 – 3 September 1658) was an English military and political leader and later Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. Born into the middle gentry, albeit to a family descended from the sister of King Henry VIII's minister Thomas Cromwell, Cromwell was relatively obscure for the first 40 years of his life.
Thomas Cromwell, Chancellor to Henry VIII and his chief minister, was executed on Tower Hill, London, for promoting the King's failed marriage to Anne of Cleves, on this day 28th July, 1540. Henry also married Catherine Howard, his fifth wife on the same day. Cromwell's Death Mask
