A SMALL SONGYE POWER HALF FIGURE Democratic Republic of the Congo 14 cm. high Nkisi, standing with the arms in relief, the body and head pierced all over for the insertion of copper nails, several of which remain, fetish cavity in the abdomen, iron spike in the top of the head, a bundles of fetish material wrapped in skin about the chest and waist, plaited fibre band about the waist, copper ring about the neck, dark reddish brown patina. Fang helmet hat - men and women in this region had rich hairdos in helmet shape, decorated with beads, cowries, buttons, and brass nails and constructed over raffia or palm leaf supports. Some hats were fashioned in the same manner and form. According to Tessmann, the hats were made only by the Fang and the Ntum. The hats, like the coiffures, were worn daily, but the hats were removed for hunting and mourning. D: 23 cm; H: 18 cm, coll. in situ, about 1960
