This Jewel Beetle, found in the Messel Pit in Germany, is 47 million years old. It still has its shimmering coat. Both ancient and modern jewel beetles sport their iridescent exteriors thanks to the way different layers in their outer body coverings refract light.
Doublet conserved at the Hessischen Landesmuseum Darmstadt, probably made in Koln in 1610-1620. This doublet of dark red silk satin is cut snugly, the collar is rigid. The surface layer of satin is pinked and shows the shiny black satin that lies underneath. Lining seems to be made of changeable brown-black taffeta and pale linen. A very beautiful garment.
