Longyearbyen, Norway the northernmost town in the world.
The world’s northernmost city – and Svalbard’s only town with more than a handful of inhabitants – Longyearbyen is the base for tourism in Svalbard. We took a Maxi Taxi guided tour and learned these fun facts about Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen: "Many visitors are surprised to find a normal town where they expected a pioneer city. This is no rough, tough ‘Man’s World’, but a place for families. There are two kindergartens, a school and a small church built in 1958 to replace its war-damaged predecessor. Svalbard’s lone functioning church belongs to the official Norwegian Lutheran Church and has a roomy hall and a vicarage." Svalbard: The Bradt Guide www.bradtguides.com
