"King George V (1865-1936) - father of King George VI (1895-1952). One of the few men in history who can make that beard and moustache combination work (apart from Nicholas II who also looks great) and actually look wonderful in it."
Bognor bites back! After 80 years its royal name is under threat. But the people of our most derided seaside town are fighting back
King George V's 13 week stay in Bognor in 1929 helped him recover from lung surgery. The town celebrated when the King agreed to grant Bognor the accolade of ‘Regis — of the King’. What they were not told was the King’s response to the idea. ‘Bugger Bognor!’ he told his secretary, Lord Stamfordham. A popular but mythical story is that the King uttered the words on his deathbed in 1936. Assured he would enjoy another trip there, the King reputedly groaned ‘Bugger Bognor!’ and then expired.
