Louisa Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire

Louisa Frederica Augusta Cavendish, 8th Duchess of Devonshire, formerly Louisa Montagu, 7th Duchess of Manchester, née Luise Fredericke Auguste Countess von Alten (15 June 1832, Hanover|15 July 1911, Surrey) Louisa was appointed Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria on 24 February 1858, and remained in that office until the fall of Lord Derby's government on 11 June 1859.

Louisa Frederica Augusta Cavendish, 8th Duchess of Devonshire, formerly Louisa Montagu, Duchess of Manchester, née Luise Fredericke Auguste Countess von Alten (15.6.1832|15.7.1911) daughter of Karl Franz Viktor, Count von Alten & Hermine de Schminke. On 22.7.1852 at Hanover, she married Viscount Mandeville, eldest son of the 6th Duke of Manchester. He succeeded his father as the 7th Duke on 8.8.1855, Louisa became Duchess of Manchester. They had 5 children.

Dowager Duchess of Hamilton, née Lady Mary Louisa Elizabeth Montagu, eldest daughter of William Montagu, 7th Duke of Manchester & Countess Luise Friederike Auguste von Alten; dressed as Mary of Hamilton, Lady-in-Waiting to Mary, Queen of Scots, for the Devonshire House Ball, 1897. She married William Alexander Louis Stephen Douglas-Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton, 9th Duke of Brandon, 2nd Duke of Châtellerault (1845|95) on 10.12.1873 at Kimbolton Castle. They had 1 daughter.

Luise Friederike Auguste, Gräfin von Alten, the double duchess. She married Wiliiam Montagu, 7th duke of Manchester as her first husband, and after his death, took Spencer Cavendish, 8th duke of Devonshire as her second.

The Devonshire Tiara also known as the Derby tiara was made for the wife of the 8th Duke of Devonshire, Countess Louise von Alten. She was known as the 'Double Duchess', as she had previously been married to the Duke of Manchester. The tiara is designed as a graduated row of thirteen scrolled palmette motifs, alternating with lotus motifs. These can be removed and worn as individual brooches and other ornaments.
