Neuherberg, 21. Juni 2016. Wissenschaftler am Helmholtz Zentrum München beschreiben im ‚ Journal of Clinical Investigation‘ einen neuen Wirkstoff, der sehr effizient überschüssiges Kupfer aus Leberzellen bindet.
Depression in men is as deadly as obesity and heart disease, according to new research. Scientists from Helmholtz Zentrum München, the Technical University of Munich and the German Centre for Cardiovascular Disease found that around 15% of deaths related to cardiovascular disease were caused by mental

Scientists of Helmholtz Zentrum München have now discovered that Arabidopsis thaliana plants can fix atmospheric nitric oxide (NO) with the aid of plant hemoglobin proteins. Using this previously unknown mechanism these plants can contribute to the improvement of air quality.
A research group from Helmholtz Zentrum München has developed an assay whereby mini-breasts in-a-dish can be grown, with cultured human breast epithelial cells rebuilt into the three-dimensional tissue architecture of the mammary gland. For this purpose, a transparent gel is used in which cells divide and spread, similar to the developing mammary gland during puberty. Specifically, cells divide and generate hollow ducts that form a network of branches and terminate in grape-like structures.
Alzheimer's disease may be 'at work' years ahead of actual symptoms, say IU researchers
Natural killer cells of the immune system can fend off malignant lymphoma cells and thus are considered a promising therapeutic approach. However, previous studies show that in the direct vicinity of the tumour they lose their effect without a full understanding of this mechanism. Now, researchers of Helmholtz Zentrum München have now elucidated which mechanisms block the natural killer cells and how this blockade could be lifted. The is study is published in the European Journal of…
An international consortium from the TU Dresden and the Helmholtz Zentrum München, together with researchers from Vienna, Bristol and Denver (USA) have successfully completed the first step in development of an insulin vaccine to prevent type 1 diabetes. As reported by the team in the journal JAMA, evaluations of the international Pre-POINT study point to a positive immune response in persons at risk for the disease who were given oral doses of insulin. Adverse reactions such as…
