NGC 1499: The California Nebula Credit & Copyright: Markus Noller (Deep Sky Images) What's California doing in space? Drifting through the Orion Arm of the spiral Milky Way Galaxy, this cosmic cloud by chance echoes the outline of California on the west coast of the United States. Our own Sun also lies within the Milky Way's Orion Arm, only about 1,500 light-years from the California Nebula. Also known as NGC 1499, the classic emission nebula is around 100 light-years long.

IC 1805: Light from the Heart In fact, the nebular glow is often dominated by hydrogen atoms emitting light in only a small fraction of that broad region of the spectrum that we see as the color red. Adopting an artificial color scheme commonly used for narrow band images of emission nebulae, this beautifully detailed view shows the light from sulfur atoms in red hues, with hydrogen in green, and oxygen atoms in blue. http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap040917.html

The concept of humanity being alone in the universe is frightening. A scan of 100,000 galaxies shows no sign of Alien civilizations. Above: A false-color image of the mid-infrared emission from the Great Galaxy in Andromeda, as seen by Nasa’s WISE space telescope. The orange color represents emission from the heat of stars forming in the galaxy’s spiral arms. Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/WISE Team
