American political activist, scholar, professor, author and nationally prominent radical of the 1960s, Angela Davis. Of well educated southern parents, she studied in the US, France and Germany, and became a leader of the Communist Party USA, and closely involved with the Black Panther Party through the Civil Rights Movement. She popularised the 'afro' hairstyle and generated pride in many African Americans, and respect for her uncompromising stance, amongst students around the world

She was tried and the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. The fact that she owned the guns used in the crime was judged not sufficient to establish her responsibility for the plot. Her experience as a prisoner in the US played a key role in convincing her to fight against the prison industrial complex in the US.
