Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) gilt als Mitbegründer der Geographie als empirischer Wissenschaft. Er beschäftigte sich aber u.a. auch mit Physik, Chemie, Geologie, Botanik, Zoologie und Astronomie. Sein Bruder Wilhelm (1767-1835) war Mitgründer der Berliner Universität (der heutigen Humboldt-Universität). Dieses Gemälde Alexanders stammt von Joseph Stieler aus dem Jahr 1843.
