Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) gilt als Mitbegründer der Geographie als empirischer Wissenschaft. Er beschäftigte sich aber u.a. auch mit Physik, Chemie, Geologie, Botanik, Zoologie und Astronomie. Sein Bruder Wilhelm (1767-1835) war Mitgründer der Berliner Universität (der heutigen Humboldt-Universität). Dieses Gemälde Alexanders stammt von Joseph Stieler aus dem Jahr 1843.

Alexander von Humboldt (September 14, 1769 – May 6, 1859) was a Prussian geographer, naturalist and explorer, whose quantitative work on botanical geography laid the foundation for the field of biogeography.
