Milwaukee historian John Gurda recently wrote a piece for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recapping the cities cycling history. The above photo is of the Western Union bicycle delivery crew way back in 1891. Milwaukee was the first city in the US to delivery telegrams by bicycle. Today the building houses the Swinging Door Saloon, a bar frequented by today’s Milwaukee bike messengers.

Looking for another way to promote mobility, a short-lived experiment with bicycles was seen as a means to replace horses. In 1896 a select group of hardy men from the 25th Infantry peddled from Fort Missoula, Montana, to St. Louis, Missouri. Their cycling experiences would take them to Minerva Terrace in Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park.
