Παραλία Μάταλα, Κρήτη - Matala Beach, Crete
Matala Beach is a popular tourist destination located on the southern coast of Crete, Greece, about 65 kilometers southwest of Heraklion. One of the most distinctive features of Matala beach are the carved caves in the soft white limestone cliffs on the northwest side of the bay. These caves date back to Roman and early Christian times and were likely used as tombs and later as living spaces. During the 1960s and 1970s, Matala became a popular destination for hippies, who lived freely in the caves until they were expelled by the Greek government in the 1970s
